Core and Clock Speed of CPU.

Have you heard the words 'Core' and 'Clock Speed' while buying laptops or smartphones? Well, they are some critical part of the processors. Every processor in the market is advertised by these terms, Eg:- octa-core, quad-core, 2.4 GHz, 2.0 GHz. What are they? You are gonna know it now.

CORE:

For explaining 'Core' let's take an example of Snapdragon 865 processor. This chipset is an octa-core processor which simply means that this processor has inbuilt 8 cores. Each core act as an individual processor. Technically, these cores do the job when you trigger a program. So 8-core means it can do 8 tasks at a time. Hence, this system on chip has inbuilt 8 processors which are termed as cores. Earlier, we used to have single core processors but now we have octa-core CPUs.

In early 2000s, manufacturers were finding a way to boost the performance and one way was by integrating multiple CPUs which caused increase in price. Then they landed on the idea of implementing multiple CPUs in a single processor i.e. termed as cores.

CLOCK SPEED:

Clock speed is another simple term, so let's take an example of 2.0 GHz processor. Clock speed is the speed at which the circuit operates. This speed is measured in Hz. 1 Hz means that the circuit has operated 1 time per second. Therefore 2.0 GHz means circuit has operated 2 billion times per second. It can be referred as the number of times the CPU has been initiated. Technically, more the clock speed, more speed the CPU works with which will determine how many calculations CPU can perform in one second of time. But if you compare the clock speed of old processors and new processors, you will find that there were processors back then with higher clock speed like 2.0 GHz. Then why new generation processors have more speeds? It mainly depends on the structure of the circuits which have been improved drastically over time.
